PayUp is a Messages extension that lets two people share a private ledger of money owed inside their iMessage thread. We designed it to need as little of your data as possible. This page explains exactly what is and isn't collected, used, or shared.
What we collect
Nothing. PayUp does not have a backend, accounts, sign-ins, or analytics. We do not collect personal information, contacts, financial data, location, identifiers, or usage data of any kind.
What stays on your device
- The names you set for yourself and the other person in a conversation
- Your local copy of the shared ledger (transactions, dates, notes, statuses)
- Your $10 / $20 / $50 preset amounts
This data is stored in iOS UserDefaults, which is sandboxed to the app on your device. It is included in your iCloud or iTunes backup if you have those enabled, exactly like any other app's local data. Removing PayUp removes this data.
What gets sent through iMessage
When you send a Pay, Receive, or Request action, PayUp creates an iMessage that contains the transaction details (amount, status, your stated names, a unique ID). That message is delivered through Apple's iMessage service the same way any other text or sticker would be. Apple's privacy policy applies to that delivery.
Third parties
None. PayUp does not include any third-party SDKs, advertising networks, analytics providers, or trackers. No data leaves your device except the iMessages you choose to send.
Children
PayUp is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from anyone of any age, since it does not collect data at all.
Changes
If we ever change how PayUp handles data, we will update this page and bump the effective date above. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
